  • Beyond the Pain: How Hypnotherapy Helped One Brave Client Overcome Seizures and Regain Control

Every now and then, a client’s story comes along that serves as a powerful reminder of why I do this work.

Recently, a truly remarkable woman—living with multiple long-term health conditions—generously offered to share her transformation. Her journey from feeling trapped by her own body to reclaiming her independence is nothing short of inspiring.

If you or a loved one are feeling stuck in a cycle of chronic illness and anxiety, her story proves that deep, lasting change is entirely possible.

A Decade of Chronic Pain and Sudden Setbacks

For more than ten years, this client didn’t know what a pain-free day felt like. Diagnosed with both rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia, her daily life was an ongoing physical battle.

As if that wasn’t enough, a brutal two-year window brought a series of medical crises: a severe haemorrhage, a major surgery to remove a tumour, and then a second follow-up surgery.

Just when she thought she had endured the worst, a terrifying new symptom emerged.

From Medical Emergency to Ten Seizures a Day

One evening, she suddenly found herself unable to move or speak. Having watched her grandmother suffer from strokes, panic set in. Fortunately, her mother was nearby to call an emergency ambulance.

The next morning, her condition took an unpredictable turn. She was hit by violent, full-body seizures, accompanied by uncontrollable vocal outbursts and movements that doctors compared to a rare, sudden onset of Tourette’s syndrome.

With an incredible sense of humour, she later recalled fighting through the spasms, karate-chopping the air between seizures like a “Ninja Warrior.”

But behind the humour lay a devastating reality. The hospital couldn’t stop the episodes, and even after being discharged, she was experiencing up to ten violent seizures every single day.

In an instant, she lost her driving licence, her independence, and her freedom. Trapped in her own home and unable to be left alone, frustration and anxiety took over.

    The Turning Point: Finding Hypnotherapy

After nearly a year of living in fear, she decided she couldn’t go on like this. She knew she needed a different approach—and that’s when she reached out to me.

By working directly with her subconscious mind, we focused on calming her nervous system, reducing anxiety, and shifting her perspective on her health.

Here is what she had to say about the experience:

“This is the best decision I have ever made. He made me view my life very differently. He gave me the positivity and confidence to do new things. He has helped me to control my anxiety and, as I am writing this, I am touching every piece of wood in sight — but I have not had any seizures since seeing Neil.”

    Real Progress, Real Freedom

The results speak for themselves. Not only has she remained completely seizure-free since beginning her hypnotherapy sessions, but she has also successfully reduced her reliance on daily pain medication. For someone who spent a decade trapped in chronic pain and a year paralyzed by daily seizures, this transformation is life-changing.

  • Say Goodbye to Skin Conditions

Itching For a Cure? Hypnotherapy Can Help with Skin Conditions

This month I am focusing on how hypnotherapy can help with the management of skin conditions.

As many of us who have suffered from these conditions will know, peeling off those extra layers of clothing and exposing skin to the summer sunshine may be good for us. But we do not want others to see our skin.

Thousands of people suffer with the discomfort, stress and embarrassment that skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema, can bring. These conditions are usually not life threatening.  But they can cause untold misery to those who have to deal with them day in and day out.

The skin is our largest organ as well as the most visible, especially during the summer months. Whether it is through sweating when we are too warm, shivering when we are too cold, or doing its job of getting rid of toxins and waste through the skin, this piece of body ‘covering’ has a lot of work to do. It is often the first place where any signs of illness, stress and imbalance in our lives, physically or psychologically, shows itself. As those who suffer are only too aware, the more we worry about the state of our skin, the worse it seems to get!

So where does hypnotherapy come in to the treatment of these conditions? Well, it seems that us hypnotherapists have been working with clients with these conditions for years.

Some of us may be aware that there is often a mind-body connection with some common skin conditions, so this is often where support from hypnotherapy can help. To give you some more detail…

In order to do its work, the skin contains millions of nerve endings which are closely connected to the brain, which is our body’s main ‘Control Centre’. Because of these links to our nervous system, the skin is very closely connected to our emotional responses, as well as those physical ones.

For example, goose bumps when we are afraid, blushing when embarrassed, and so on. When we feel stressed, these emotional responses can make some skin conditions worse if you have them already. Or can in some cases bring them on.

    Pain control.

Hypnotherapy is a great way to reduce stress levels in general. We understand that stress and anxiety affect the chemical responses in the body and mind. Hypnotherapy can really help to recreate that sense of balance. This is shown to improve skin conditions in general. There is mounting evidence to show that hypnotherapy is very helpful for pain control too. It is helpful for reducing the stress and chemical responses that cause flare-ups. It can also reduce the pain that’s associated with them. We work in a way that helps the client to manage stressful situations more effectively. Thus reducing the possibility of re-occurrence.

I encourage clients to focus on how they want things to be. We avoid problem-talk and instead help our clients to visualise their preferred future. By encouraging clients to think and express themselves positively, we can help to improve their outcomes and say goodbye to skin conditions.

  • Rita Westlake’s Retirement from North Cornwall Hypnotherapy

In November 2016, Rita Westlake retired from North Cornwall Hypnotherapy after many years of helping people across Cornwall improve their lives through hypnotherapy.

As I prepared to take over the practice, I found myself reflecting on the enormous contribution Rita had made, not only to her clients but also to the wider community.

    Rita Westlake

Throughout her career, Rita showed a remarkable commitment to helping others. Her professionalism, compassion and dedication never wavered, and she earned the trust and respect of countless clients over the years.

Having experienced hypnotherapy with Rita, I was fortunate to learn from her experience too and benefit from her guidance. She taught me far more than hypnotherapy techniques; she demonstrated the importance of genuinely caring about the people who walk through your door seeking help.

Many former clients will remember Rita fondly and will appreciate the positive impact she had on their lives. Helping people overcome challenges, gain confidence and improve their wellbeing was always at the heart of her work.

Taking over North Cornwall Hypnotherapy was both an honour and a responsibility. I was grateful for the confidence Rita placed in me and determined to continue providing the same high standards of care and professionalism that she had established.

The future of NCH is bright, and I am excited about the journey ahead. With Rita’s blessing, I will ensure that NCH provides the same high-quality treatments and care that she has always provided. The website for NCH is being updated and forwarded to this one, as it has been over four years since I took it over.

While it was sad to see Rita retire, it was a well-deserved next chapter in her life, and I wish her every happiness in retirement.

I remain grateful for everything she contributed to the practice and to the many people she helped over the years. Her legacy continues to be remembered and appreciated.

    Thank you, Rita.
